On New Year’s I found myself sitting on a couch, donning a party hat and with a napkin in my hand that read “Do more, experience life.” That single sentence was my New Year’s resolution for 2015. I set out on a mission to experience what life had to offer no matter how big or small. As, I began to compile a list of what I wanted to do and accomplish for 2015, I was reminded of a motto that my former high school teacher would say, “When creativity is involved, your experiences will be heightened.” That phrase played in my head over and over again like a broken record. I took it as a sign and decided that my first adventure had to involve exploration into my creative side.
A week later, opportunity came knocking! I was checking my emails when I came upon and invitation to attend a “Painting with a Twist” class. If there is one thing I have been taught, when a great opportunity presents itself… You TAKE IT! So, of course, I jumped at the chance and registered for a class. A few minutes later reality set in, all these questions filled my head like: How am I going to pull this off? What was I thinking? I’m not Picasso!
Two weeks later, the day had finally arrived; I walked into my class and found the room set up with tables, stools and easels. Along the walls, were beautifully painted pieces of work and a full bar towards the back of the room. I checked-in, grabbed an apron and found my seat. As I sat there, I won’t lie I was a bit anxious and nervous. I know my artistic abilities are limited. I like to refer to myself as ‘artistically challenged.” Even, my stick figures come out funky looking. Now, you may be saying how is that possible? Oh, it’s possible! As I waited for the class to begin, I chatted with fellow attendees some of whom have attended a class before and some who were first timers.
It was time for class to start, the instructor; Amanda introduced herself and the staff. She gave a run through of the different type of brushes and the different color of paint. She reassured us that we didn’t have to be a master painter to enjoy this class and you know what? She was right! We started with simple strokes of blue and white for the sky and transitioned into our wildflowers. The staff did an amazing job keeping the atmosphere fun.
Amanda kept us entertained with her witty jokes and with her back and forth banters with us. Sheri, the manager walked around the room making sure everyone was having a good time. If at any point you wanted a drink, just head over to the bar and you’d be taken care of. We reached a point, where it was time to let the paint dry and what better way to pass time waiting for paint to dry, than with an epic hula hooping contest! Yes, I said it! Amanda busted out the hula hoops.
We returned to our seats, continued the party with music playing in the background and the sounds of paint brushes patting against the easels. I was enjoying my experience and I glanced up and saw everyone around me having a great time too. People were laughing, chatting and some were even dancing.
At the end of class, we signed our initials on our paintings and gathered up on stage as a class and took on massive group picture. All in all, I had a blast from beginning to end. I had so much fun that I did not worry about my artistic skills at once. This is an experience I will never forget. I will definitely be returning in the future. If you are looking for a fun idea for a hangout with your friends or family, I would recommend taking a class at Painting with a Twist. Prepare to have a great time.
(Thanks for the Photobomb Amanda :P)
